Wamego, Kansas

On the road to Utah recently, I had to make a detour to Wamego, Kansas, to see this gorgeous old Dutch windmill.

It was built in 1879 by a Dutch immigrant 12 miles north of Wamego. It was used to grind grain into flour and cornmeal.

In 1925, it was disassembled piece by piece, then moved by 35 team and wagons to Wamego.

The mill is 25 ft. in diameter and 45 feet high.

A bust of Ceres, goddess of grain, is set above the window.

It was well worth the detour to come see this monument to Kansas pioneers!

 The Wamego Museum is right next to the windmill. I didn't have time to explore inside. I'm not sure if it was even open or not. It's still that time of year when some things are still "closed for the season".

El Dorado, Kansas Sign

I love state welcome signs, but I love a good city welcome sign, too, believe it or not. :) Some try to catch your attention, but most don't even bother. I just have to say that this El Dorado, Kansas, welcome sign is one of my favorites. There are no corny slogans like "where creativity meets progress" or some such yawner. No, this one is simple and welcoming. It's perfect!

This handsome fella went to Ella in Kentucky. She is 8 years old and loves animals, especially wolves and turtles.

Kaj Stenvall, Reindeer and Cowboy Boots Postcards

Another very strange, but cool, Kaj Stenvall postcard from Jaana in Finland. This one is titled "With One Touch". 

 This second card from Jaana is terrific! Reindeer with a background of the sun breaking through the snow covered pine trees...beautiful scene.

Simone  has cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, a dog and a horse at home. She requested cards with animals.  Did I nail this one or what??

Geographic Center Of The US: Lebanon, Kansas

Technically, just the center of the contiguous 48 states of the US. Even more technically, there's a marker on the outskirts of town marking the spot that is near the actual spot.... Did you catch that? A marker for the spot near the actual spot. (Because the actual spot is on private property.) A picture of the marker of the spot near the spot would have been nice, wouldn't it? But I didn't know about the marker marking the spot near the spot at the time. I know, I know...I'm bummed about it, too!

World's Largest Ball Of Twine!

Apparently, there are several largest balls of twine...but STILL..it's a silly and cool and fun kind of thing!









Doesn't really look like a ball, does it?
But it did years ago.










It smells really twiney.









The signs could use some sprucing up and updating...but STILL....well....you know the rest!
