Graceland, Home of Elvis Presley - Part 1

For those still in the afterglow of Elvis Presley's 80th Birthday 2/3 Month, I have great news, MORE Elvis shtuff is here!....

Last week, I made a brief stop at Graceland and snapped a few photos... A view from the street is as close as you can get without boarding a tour bus.

Here are a couple Graceland postcards for comparison...

This one looks to be from its heyday of Elvis living there.

This one shows the plaque stating that Graceland has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Continuing Elvis' 80th Birthday 2/3 Month....

Graceland, in Memphis, Tennessee, was the home of Elvis and family members from 1957 through 1993, even though Elvis died in 1977.

And yet again, I must say that the before, during and after story of Elvis and Graceland is very interesting. :)

Great Horned Owl Postcard

What a great surprise it was to find this great Great Horned Owl postcard from Brenda in my mailbox this past week. She had been visiting the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee/North Carolina, and actually mailed the card from there! Very cool....and great! :)

The Great Smoky Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.They truly are GREAT!

Rusty Mechanism, a Giant Among Men

I found this big guy at an old-factory-turned-dining-retail-entertainment-complex called The Factory in Franklin, Tennessee, which is actually listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

So, anyway, his name is Rusty Mechanism. He is 20 ft. in height, and weighs in at a hefty 4600 pounds. (6.096m/2087kg)
And he stands as a tribute to American industry and all working people.

The closer you get, the more clever detail you spot.

Each hand took a minimum of 30 days to construct.

And the finale of the "back in January" series is this card of Graceland, home of Elvis Presley. It is now in Italy, with Claudia. I can't recall why I chose this particular card for her. I must have seen it in her favorites.

Eileen in the UK had a wide variety of topics on her wish list. "BIG letter" cards was on the list.
I really like this one from Memphis, Tennessee.

And since she kindly asked for her card to be mailed in an envelope, I figured I might as well get more bang for my buck (well, 98 cents, actually) and slipped in a couple more cards from her wish list.
This one, a US map......

.....and this one, a sweet little hard-working hummingbird.

And of course, I smothered the envelope with a bunch of stamps!

Guenni in Germany said he'd like a picture taken from my kitchen window. I didn't have any on hand that day, so I sent him this card that I spotted in his favorites gallery.
It's a 1940s photo of some of the 400 men who worked on the Mt. Rushmore sculpture in South Dakota.

I tried to match some stamps to his interest in culture, art and paintings.

Dolly

I've been a Dolly Parton fan forever, so when I had the chance recently to make a quick stop in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee I took it!

This Dolly statue is in front of the Sevier County Courthouse in Sevierville.

  Sad to say, after searching umpteen souvenir shops in nearby Pigeon Forge, home of Dollywood, there are NO Dolly postcards to be found. I suspect those babies are sitting in a gift shop in Dollywood itself. Next time, I'll find out!
